Preconception Counseling Decreases Risk of Birth Defects

Through our preconception clinic, our highly trained staff of obstetricians, nurses and dietitians assists women in managing their diabetes and maintaining good control of blood sugar levels before conception to decrease the risk of problems during pregnancy.
Diabetes Education Saves Lives
Education is vital to managing diabetes during pregnancy. At the Ruhlman Women & Newborn Center, patients receive prenatal care and information from our diabetes specialists. Our diabetes nurse-educators and nutritionists specialize in diabetes during pregnancy and are available to assist patients any time. We provide the following:
- Individual sessions with our diabetes nurse-educators to learn how to test blood glucose levels using a glucometer
- Individual sessions to learn how to prepare and give an insulin injection
Diabetes Boot Camp
Specifically for pregnant women with gestational diabetes, this program combines multiple appointments with specialists into a three-hour, one-stop-shop approach. Patients receive diabetes education, nutrition counseling and a one-on-one consultation with a maternal-fetal medicine physician. For the remainder of the pregnancy, patients have the convenience of weekly blood sugar monitoring and responsive treatment conducted via email and/or phone.
Fetal Ultrasounds Detect Potential Problems
Antenatal Testing Units (ATU) are located in Cleveland at University Hospitals MacDonald Women’s Hospital and at our facility at University Hospitals Ahuja Medical Center’s Kathy Risman Pavilion in Beachwood, Ohio. On the west side, patients can receive advanced care at UH Fertility – Maternal Fetal Medicine Center West at the Crocker Corporate Center across from Crocker Park in Westlake. Additionally, these facilities feature RDMS- and AIUM-certified sonographers and state-of-the-art ultrasound machines with color flow Doppler and 3D and 4D capabilities.
