Rachel Pope, a native of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, graduated from Case Western Reserve University in 2006, where she participated in a dual degree program that enabled her to receive her bachelor’s degree in Anthropology and pursue a Masters of Public Health in International Health with an additional semester of study. While at Case, she conducted research on the maternal health system in Brazil, childbirth support in the form of doulas, and witnessed her first birth in Ghana. Her research on women's reproductive health led her to Tanzania, interviewing women afflicted with vesicovaginal fistulas who were reintegrating into society. She then attended the Medical School for International Health, a collaboration between Ben-Gurion University in Israel and Columbia University Medical Center in New York City, where she worked with pregnant refugees from Sudan and Eritrea, and continued her passion for preventing and repairing obstetric fistulas, and improving women's health.
