Maria Shaker is a native Clevelander, but she has always had a global mindset, as the youngest of four with very ethnic parents. She is a proud alumna of the University of Connecticut and a graduate of Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) with a Masters in Applied Anatomy. She was inspired to explore the limitless world of global health by one of her closest friends, and her interest gained momentum after enrolling in an anthropology class at CWRU. As a medical student, she spent time in Guatemala and Swaziland. Global health excites Maria because it has opened her eyes to the international world of medical education, which she has found brimming with lessons about cultural sensitivity, the necessity of effective communication, and the challenge of delivering care in resource-limited environments. Maria is planning a career in general obstetrics and gynecology, with the hopes of dedicating her career to academic medicine in an international setting.
