Art Therapy

The Art Therapy Program at the Ireland Cancer Center offers patients and families an effective complementary therapy using the art process for expression and communication of feelings and life experiences. The art therapist guides the creative process with patients to reflect and explore their personal imagery.

Art therapy encourages self-expression through the use of art media. The artwork becomes a source of communication through which one can reflect upon and work through areas of conflict and distress. Unexpressed feelings such as anger, sadness, and fear can lead to anxiety and depression as well as hinder personal relationships. Art therapy provides a supportive nonjudgmental environment where feelings can be expressed and understood.

Through creating art and exploring personal symbols and objects one can:

  • Achieve greater self-understanding
  • Articulate conflicting emotions and thoughts
  • Develop coping skills
  • Build self-esteem and confidence
  • Alleviate stress and anxiety
  • Attain feelings of empowerment
  • Maintain and improve emotional stability
