University Hospitals Seidman Cancer Center Promotes Awareness of Esophageal Cancer Symptoms and Risk Factors

During the early stages of esophageal cancer, patients may not experience any symptoms. However, as the cancer grows, the following signs are common:

  • Regurgitation of food or food getting stuck in the esophagus
  • Pain during swallowing
  • Chest or back pain
  • Weight loss
  • Heartburn or indigestion
  • Hoarseness or cough that lasts for more than two weeks

Risk Factors

  • Age (i.e., 65 years or older)
  • Gender (male)
  • Race (African-American)
  • Smoking
  • Heavy drinking of alcoholic beverages
  • Poor nutrition
  • Obesity
  • Acid reflux
  • Barrett’s esophagus
