What are Kidneys?

Each individual has two kidneys. The kidneys are fist-sized, bean-shaped organs that are located on either side of a person’s backbone just above the mid-section or waist. The tubes inside the kidneys have the very important job of cleaning the blood, removing waste products and making urine. Kidney cancer can form in the lining of these small tubes, and typically develops in individuals over the age of 40.

What is Kidney Cancer?

Kidney cancer, sometimes called hypernephroma, is a malignant, cancerous tumor found in the kidney. There are two major types of primary kidney tumors: transitional cell tumors (transitional cell carcinoma) and renal cortical tumors (renal cell carcinoma).

Renal cortical tumors account for nearly 90 percent of all kidney tumors. Other tumors of the kidney, namely transitional cell tumors, form in the kidneys as well as the ureters and bladder.

Kidney cancer rarely strikes children and young adults; however, the exceptions are Wilms’ tumor, a pediatric kidney cancer, and some forms of hereditary kidney cancer, such as von Hippel-Lindau disease (VHL).
