The primary goal of UH Seidman Cancer Center surgeons is to eliminate a patient's bladder cancer completely while maintaining urinary and sexual function. Our surgeons are integral in developing and implementing innovative surgical and minimally invasive techniques for the treatment of bladder cancer.

Traditional Surgical Techniques

There are types of bladder cancer that are best treated with traditional, surgical procedures. A UH Seidman Cancer Center surgeon will perform traditional surgical procedures when he or she believes that it is necessary to remove lymph nodes and organs residing near the bladder.

  • Radical cystectomy: A radical cystectomy is performed using an open approach, meaning the surgeon must make an abdominal incision to access the bladder.

Minimally invasive surgical techniques include:

  • Laparoscopic surgery: A surgical technique in which a standard operation is performed through three or more half-inch incisions. A tiny video camera on the end of the scope is inserted into one of the incisions and guides the physician through the procedure.
  • daVinci® Surgical System cystectomy: The daVinci® Surgical System uses state-of-the-art technology, allowing the surgeon to perform a more precise cystectomy operation than what conventional surgery allows.
