University Hospitals Ireland Cancer Center Now University Hospitals Seidman Cancer Center’s Team Utilizes a Unique Approach to Patient Care
Melanoma usually appears as an irregular brown, black and/or red spot, or an existing mole that begins to change color, size or shape. Although melanoma is relatively uncommon, it is the deadliest form of skin cancer. According to the National Cancer Institute, each year more than 53,600 Americans are diagnosed with melanoma.
Patients who have early stage melanoma may be cured with surgery alone, while patients with a more advanced disease will often need additional treatment. Since many of our patients require different services at the beginning and during the course of melanoma, UH Seidman Cancer Center's team offers a comprehensive and effective approach to the diagnosis, treatment and care of this disease.
Multidisciplinary Approach
UH Seidman Cancer Center is the only hospital in Northeast Ohio that brings the expertise of a multidisciplinary team to each patient in our melanoma clinic. Our patients first see multiple specialists, all of whom work together to create the best comprehensive solution possible. Depending on the individualized care plan, team members can include:
- Surgical oncologists
- Medical oncologists
- Plastic surgeons
- Radiation oncologists
- Dermatologists
- Oncology nurses
- Dietitians
- Social workers
In addition to seeing a UH team for evaluation, every patient’s case is presented to a Tumor Review Board. The board provides a unique opportunity for surgeons, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, dermatologists, nurses, social workers, dietitians and many others involved in melanoma treatment to consult on the case. Through this collaborative process, UH Seidman Cancer Center offers a unique approach to care, leading our patients toward the best possible outcome.
