According to the National Cancer Institute, skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States. In fact, about one million Americans are diagnosed with the disease each year.

Skin cancer begins with the uncontrolled growth of skin cells. If left unchecked, cancer cells can spread from the skin to other tissues and organs. Most skin cancers occur on areas of the skin that are regularly exposed to or burned by ultraviolet radiation. Other risk factors include the individual’s complexion, genetics and age.
Skin cancers are often classified into two types:
- Melanoma: the most deadly type of skin cancer, which forms in the melanocytes (skin cells that make pigment)
- Nonmelanoma: the most common type of skin cancer; it includes basal cell and squamous cell carcinoma
