Early Detection for Colorectal Cancer
The American Cancer Society estimates that one in nineteen people in the United States will develop colorectal cancer during their lifetime. In fact, colorectal cancer is the third most commonly diagnosed cancer and the third leading cause of cancer death in both American men and women. Fortunately, colorectal cancer can be prevented if precancerous polyps are detected early through colonoscopic screening and promptly removed. Colorectal cancer is also curable, with 90 percent survival rates noted, when discovered and treated in its early stages.
Multidisciplinary Team of Specialists
UH Seidman Cancer Center utilizes a multidisciplinary team, which is usually led by an experienced colon and rectal surgeon, to effectively treat colorectal cancer. Our expert health care professionals specialize in the treatment of patients with all stages of colon and rectal cancer, including those with locally advanced and recurrent colorectal tumors, as well as those whose cancer has spread to other organs (metastatic disease).
At UH Seidman Cancer Center, our patients receive a team approach to their health care. Our physicians consult together on each case to create the most comprehensive individualized care plan possible. The following specialists may be involved in the care of gastrointestinal cancer patients:
- Colorectal surgeons
- Medical oncologists
- Radiation oncologists
- Gastroenterologists
- Hepatobiliary surgeons
- Thoracic surgeons
- Enterostomal therapists
- Urologists
- Gynecologic oncologists
- Geneticists
- Oncology nurses
- Dietitians
- Social workers
In addition to evaluations from UH specialists, each patient's case is presented to the Gastrointestinal Cancer Team at its weekly meeting. For more than a decade, this team has provided a unique opportunity for additional surgeons, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, gastroenterologists, pathologists, geneticists, nurses, social workers, dietitians and many others involved in colorectal cancer treatment to consult and bring a fresh perspective to the case. These experts may recommend innovative approaches not previously considered or simply confirm that the planned approach is still the most appropriate course of action. This is another method that we use to lead our patients toward positive outcomes.
