Colon Cancer Sibling Study
Researchers at the Ireland Cancer Center and the Department of Genetics at Case Western Reserve University are conducting a genetic study of families that have had colon cancer or colon polyps. Through this study, funded by the National Cancer Institute, researchers hope to find a new genetic link to colon cancer. Such a discovery will enable physicians to screen families at risk and find and remove polyps before they become cancerous.
The Sibling Study is a result of earlier research at the Ireland Cancer Center. Doctors at University Hospitals have discovered a genetic defect linked to the development of colon cancer. These and similar findings are helping scientists design newer, more effective cancer treatments.
- Individuals who have had colon cancer or colon polyps before the age of 65 years are potentially eligible to enter the study.
- In addition, brothers and sisters of individuals who have had colon cancer or colon polyps before the age of 65 years are potentially eligible to enter the study.
- Study participants will be asked to give a sample of blood to help researchers find new colon cancer genes.
