Ask the Experts - Heartburn

What’s the best way to minimize heartburn?

According to Drs. Amitabh Goel and Benjamin Bryant – board certified general surgeons at University Hospitals Geneva Medical Center and University Hospitals Conneaut Medical Center – the answer is, moderation. To alleviate occasional heartburn, eat smaller portions. Don’t smoke. And avoid tempting heartburn triggers like fried or fatty foods, onions, chocolate and alcohol. But be aware that frequent heartburn may indicate a more serious condition like gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). If you believe you have GERD, we urge you to ask the experts about it.
