According to Drs. John Baron and Susan Redline and – board-certified pulmonologists and a Sleep Medicine physicians at University Hospitals Geneva Medical Center – apnea is an extended pattern of breathing interruptions during sleep, often caused by a narrow or obstructed breathing passage. Apnea sufferers can actually stop breathing for up to 30 seconds at a time, as many as 600 times a night.
