Occupational Therapists Help Maximize Patient’s Abilities

At University Hospitals Geauga Medical Center’s rehabilitation services in Chardon, Ohio, our occupational therapists help patients maximize independence in activities of daily living. Using the latest advancements in therapy along with individualized programs, highly skilled therapists focus on orthopedic rehabilitation of the upper quarter of the body, including the shoulder, elbow, wrist and hand, after surgery, injury or disease. We also offer cancer rehabilitation services.

Additionally, our skilled occupational therapists develop specialized programs that are specific to each client. Prescribed programs may include:

  • Improving body mechanics to decrease pain during activity
  • Joint protection
  • Postural re-education
  • Scar desensitization
  • Strengthening and flexibility exercises
  • Wound care

Custom Thermoplastic Splints

Thermoplastic splints are made from a pliable plastic material that becomes flexible when warmed. Therapists are able to mold the splint for a custom fit and then after cooling, the material becomes stable to work effectively as a splint for bracing or protection of joints.

After a thorough evaluation and working with the referring physician, occupational therapists fabricate customized splints for a broad array of functional problems, including:

  • Dynamic and static splints to improve range of motion for the stiff joint
  • Fracture bracing
  • Post-surgical positioning and protection
  • Resting splints for arthritis
