Driving Assessment

Comprehensive Assessment Evaluates Driver’s Skills and Deficits

Specialists at University Hospitals Geauga Medical Center help to reduce worries and fears about driving skills with a comprehensive clinical driver evaluation. At the driver skills assessment, an occupational therapist evaluates the driver’s functional abilities, including:

  • Basic vision
  • Cognitive functions
  • Coordination and reaction time
  • Driving skills on a simulator
  • Dynamic mobility and balance
  • Problem solving
  • Range of motion and strength
  • Visual-perceptual skills

Referrals Accepted for Clinical Driving Assessment

If you or family members are concerned about driving skills of someone due to medical conditions or physical limitations, our team is available to perform a complete driving assessment. A referral may be initiated by an individual, a concerned family member, primary care physician or through adult protective services. This thorough assessment will review all functional abilities necessary for safe driving and identify those areas of concern for continued safety and community mobility.

Individual Skills Evaluation

Each person is treated on an individual basis during the evaluation. The results of the assessment are given to the driver, a guardian and the referring physician. Safety recommendations will be made if there are questions about someone’s safety while driving.

If an on-the-road assessment is necessary, our occupational therapist will also set up the driving evaluation.
