Career Opportunities at University Hospitals Geauga Medical Center’s Department of Pharmacy

There are numerous career opportunities for qualified individuals at UH Geauga Medical Center’s Department of Pharmacy in Chardon, Ohio. Some career positions and qualifications include the following:

  • Staff pharmacists: Pharmacists must be licensed in accordance with the State Board of Pharmacy regulations, and participate in continuing education requirements. Pharmacists must possess either a bachelor of science in pharmacy (BSP) or a doctorate of pharmacy (PharmD).
  • Clinical pharmacist specialists: Clinical pharmacist specialists provide clinical pharmacy services (direct patient care, drug information, drug therapy monitoring, patient-specific consultations, health care staff in-services, pharmacoepidemiology and pharmacoeconomic evaluations). In addition, they investigate, research and report adverse drug reactions, and participate in the Medication Safety and Therapeutics Committee process. These specialists evaluate requests for new drug usage, review therapeutic classes for relevance, and assist in updating the hospital formulary. At the hospital, clinical pharmacist specialists serve as an informational and patient problem-solving resource for physicians, nurses, and clinical staff pharmacists and monitor the ordering, dispensing and administration of critical medications.
  • Pharmacy residents: The UH Geauga Medical Center PGY1 Pharmacy Residency Program [link to PGY1 residency page] graduates highly skilled pharmacists with the tools necessary to provide quality patient care as members of interprofessional health care teams. Emphasis is placed on communication, lifelong learning, leadership, evidence-based medication management and patient safety in the unique setting of a community hospital. Available rotations include internal medicine, practice management, medication safety, oncology, academia, infectious disease, geriatrics, and a number of other elective opportunities.
  • Pharmacy interns: Student pharmacists provide valuable support to the department of pharmacy in both distributive functions and by serving as patient educators.
  • Technicians: Pharmacy technicians at UH Geauga Medical Center provide vital support to pharmacists and residents. They are also active members of a number of committees hospital-wide.
