Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or COPD, (emphysema, bronchitis) asthma, pulmonary fibrosis, and other lung diseases can significantly impact an individual’s ability to perform daily activities. However, there are many ways to overcome breathing problems and reduce the fear and anxiety that may accompany them.

Phase One
Phase One Rehabilitation begins during a hospital stay and is coordinated on an individual basis through the collaboration of the physician, nurse, and respiratory therapist. Education provided includes preparation for the patient and his/her family on the patient’s pulmonary condition, pulmonary risk factors, and how to care for oneself after leaving the hospital.

Phase Two
Our Phase Two Pulmonary Rehabilitation is a comprehensive, structured outpatient program consisting of therapeutic exercise, counseling, nutrition, psychosocial interventions, individual and group education. The interdisciplinary team consists of pulmonologists, nurses, occupational therapists, registered respiratory therapists, exercise physiologists, and dietitians. We work collaboratively to meet the needs and goals of all our patients. Therapeutic exercise and education sessions are scheduled three times a week, up to ten weeks. Each exercise session includes a warm-up, cardiovascular conditioning, resistance training and cool-down. The exercise sessions are customized for each participant based on diagnosis, physician recommendations and medical/health needs. Education classes for participants and family members include lung anatomy and physiology, medication, exercise training, nutrition, hygiene practices, breathing training, relaxation techniques, smoking cessation and energy conservation are provided on a weekly basis.

Phase Two Pulmonary Rehabilitation is covered by most insurance providers, however you must be referred by your physician. Before starting the program, participants undergo a pulmonary function test and cardiopulmonary exercise test.

Phase Three
We also offer an ongoing maintenance program, called Phase Three Pulmonary Rehabilitation for individuals who complete the monitored Phase Two program. The maintenance program consists of exercise sessions, meeting a minimum of two days per week, under the supervision of healthcare professionals, and participation in educational classes, if desired.
