Types of Strokes
Ischemic
Most common type of stroke
Accounts for approximately 83% of strokes
Most often caused by a blood clot
Hemorrhagic
Most often caused by a rupturing blood vessel which causes bleeding into the brain
Accounts for approximately 17% of strokes
Responsible for more than 30% of all stroke deaths
TIA - TRANSIENT ISCHEMIC ATTACK
A temporary interruption of blood flow to the brain, lasting for a few minutes up to 1 hour
Often called a “Mini Stroke”
Causes a loss of function in the area of the body that is controlled by the affected portion of the brain
Symptoms are temporary and do not result in permanent brain injury
The loss of blood supply to the brain is most often caused by a clot that spontaneously forms in a blood vessel within the brain and then resolves itself.
More than 1/3 of patients will go on to have a full blown stroke, so please do not ignore the symptoms
