Sinus Conditions

Sinusitis
The swelling of the sinus cavity and pathway lining and thickening of the mucus. Sinusitis is often caused by a bacterial infection (sinus infection) within the nasal cavity. The sinus infection causes the swelling of the sinus lining and thickening of the mucus which then results in sinus congestion. The most common identification of a bacterial infection is the change in color (from clear to yellow or green) of the mucus which drains into the nose.

Acute Sinusitis (less than four infections per year)
  • Green/yellow mucus
  • Facial pressure
  • High fever
  • Upper tooth pain
  • Congestion

Chronic Sinusitis (continuous infections)
  • Congestion/nosebleeds
  • Mild to moderate headaches
  • Chronic sore throat and cough
  • Chronic post nasal drip
  • Bad breath/taste
  • Constant fatigue/discomfort

Medical Treatment
  • Antibiotics
  • Decongestants
  • Antihistamines

Rhinitis
Inflammation of the nasal linings without thickening of the mucus.

Sinus Infections
Sinus infections are generally caused by improper draining of the sinus cavity.

Medical Treatment
  • Antibiotics
  • Occasionally the use of a steroid to decrease the inflammation in the nose
  • Decongestant: mucus thinner
  • Allergy treatment

Sinus Headaches
A headache caused by pressure within the sinus cavities.

Medical Treatment
  • Decongestants
  • Antihistamines
  • Nasal steroid sprays to treat the swelling and congestion in the sinuses

Post-Nasal Drainage and Cough
Drainage of sinus mucus into the back of your throat which causes a cough, sore throat, or nasal blockage.

Deviated Septum
The septum is the wall that divides your nose down the middle, into a right and left side allowing for a streamlined airflow for breathing. The septum is comprised of a combination of cartilage and bone, and a membrane lining. If the septum becomes twisted (deviated), it can become a nasal obstruction. Currently there is no medicine available to correct/straighten a deviated septum and requires a surgery called a septoplasty.

Nasal Polyps
Inflammatory growths, usually not cancerous, in the nose and sinuses that can obstruct the nose and sinuses, leading to nasal obstruction, recurrent infections, loss of sense of smell and taste, and other sinus symptoms including headaches, snoring, nasal congestion, and sinus drainage.

Inferior Turbinate Hypertrophy
The enlargement and swelling of the lining on each side of the nose which makes it difficult to breathe through your nose.

Medical Treatment
  • Decongestants
  • Antihistamines
  • Nasal steroid sprays
