Common Types of Cancer

Bladder Cancer
Cancer that forms in tissues of the bladder and often begins in the cells that normally makes up the inner lining of the bladder. In 2008, there will be an estimated 68,810 new cases of bladder cancer.

Breast Cancer
Cancer that forms in tissues of the breast and often occurs in the glands that make milk or the tubes that carry milk to the nipple. It occurs in both men and women, although male breast cancer is rare. In 2008, there will be an estimated 182,460 (female); 1,990 (male) new cases of breast cancer.

Colon and Rectal Cancer
Cancer that forms in the tissues of the longest part of the large intestine is colon cancer. Colon cancer frequently begins in cells that make and release mucus and other fluids. Rectal cancer occurs in the last several inches of the large intestine. In 2008, there will be an estimated 108,070 of colon cancer and 40,740 of rectal cancer.

Endometrial Cancer
Cancer that forms in the tissue lining the uterus. Typically the cancer begins in the cells that make and release mucus and other fluids. In 2008, there will be an estimated 40,100 new cases of endometrial cancer.

Kidney (Renal Cell) Cancer
Cancer that forms in tissues of the kidneys and the lining of small tubes of the kidney that filter the blood and remove waste products. In 2008, there will be an estimated 54,390 new cases of kidney cancer.

Leukemia
Cancer that starts in blood-forming tissue, i.e. bone marrow, and causes large numbers of blood cells to be produced and enter the bloodstream. In 2008, there will be an estimated 44,270 new cases of leukemia.

Lung Cancer
Cancer that forms in tissues of the lung. Typically the cancer forms in the cells lining your air passages. In 2008, there will be an estimated 215,020 new cases of lung cancer.

Melanoma
Cancer that begins in cells that make the tissue pigment, called melanin. It is most common on the skin, but can also occur in the eye or intestines. In 2008, there will be an estimated 62,480 new cases of kidney cancer.

Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma
Cancer of the immune system. In 2008, there will be an estimated 66,120 new cases of Non-Hodgkin lymphomas.

Pancreatic Cancer
Cancer found in the tissues of the pancreas. Often called exocrine cancer. In 2008, there will be an estimated 37,680 new cases of pancreatic cancer.

Prostate Cancer
Cancer found in the tissues of a gland in the male reproductive system found below the bladder and in front of the rectum called the prostate. In 2008, there will be an estimated 186,320 new cases of prostate cancer.

Skin Cancer (Nonmelanoma)
Cancer that forms in tissues of the skin. There are several types of skin cancer, but most skin cancers form in older people on parts of the body exposed to the sun or in people who have weakened immune systems. In 2008, there will be an estimated 1,000,000 new cases of skin cancer.

Thyroid Cancer
Cancer that forms in an organ at the base of the throat that makes hormones that help control heart rate, blood pressure, body temperature, and weight called the thyroid gland. In 2008, there will be an estimated 37,340 new cases of thyroid cancer.
