About
Philip Toltzis, MD, is a critical care specialist in the Division of Pediatric Critical Care at University Hospitals Rainbow Babies & Children’s. He also is Professor of Pediatrics, Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. He is the former Medical Director of the Pediatric Intensive Care Units at UH Rainbow and at Hadassah Hospital, Jerusalem, Israel.
Dr. Toltzis is board certified in pediatrics, infectious diseases and critical care medicine. His special interest is in hospital acquired infections and other infectious diseases. He has been a member of the UH Rainbow medical staff since 1988.
Dr. Toltzis is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, Philadelphia. He completed a residency in pediatrics at UH Rainbow and was Chief Resident in his final year of training. He completed a clinical and research fellowship in infectious diseases at Children's Hospital and Harvard Medical School, Boston, and a combined clinical and research fellowship in the Division of Pharmacology and Critical Care at UH Rainbow.
His research interests include the epidemiology of antibiotic-resistant organisms in pediatric patient, and disaster preparedness for pediatric critical care. Dr. Toltzis has served on a number of local, regional and national medical committees focused on reducing infections in children, and has been an invited lecturer at national and international infectious disease and critical care conferences.
Dr. Toltzis has published more than 60 papers in medical journals, edited a textbook on pediatric infectious diseases, contributed nearly 50 chapters to medical textbooks and made more than 50 abstract presentations at medical meetings. He is on the editorial board of Journal of Pediatrics.
He is a member of the Pediatric Infectious Disease Society, Society of Critical Care Medicine and Infectious Diseases Society of America.
