About

Mirela Dobre, MD, MPH, is a board-certified nephrologist at University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center, Division of Nephrology and Hypertension. She is also an associate professor at Case Western Reserve University.

After earning her medical doctorate at the University of Medicine and Pharmacy Victor Babes in Timisoara, Romania, Dr. Dobre went on to earn a Master of Public Health degree at the University of South Carolina and completed a fellowship in clinical research nephrology at Case Western Reserve University.

Dr. Dobre has a fundamental research interest in chronic kidney disease and its related metabolic and cardiovascular complications. She studied the role of acid-base abnormalities on cardiovascular disease in the Chronic Renal Insufficiency Cohort (CRIC), a multicenter National Institutes of Health (NIH) funded study. Along with her team, she found the novel link between acid-base abnormalities and heart failure in CRIC. Dr. Dobre is currently funded by the NIH to study myocardial fibrosis in hypertensive patients with and without chronic kidney disease. Her long-term research goal is to determine the intricacies between chronic kidney disease and alterations in the heart structure and function leading to an increase in cardiovascular mortality.

In addition to her active clinical and investigative efforts, Dr. Dobre provides research mentorship at individual and programmatic levels to both medical students and physician trainees. Dr. Dobre serves on the editorial board of the American Journal of Kidney Diseases and the Clinical Journal of the American Society of Nephrology.

UH Quality Care Network, is a collaboration among independent and UH employed providers. The focus is on improving the quality and efficiency of care, as well as reducing the cost of care.

Industry Relationships

University Hospitals is committed to transparency in our interactions with industry partners, such as pharmaceutical, biotech, or medical device companies. At UH, we disclose practitioner and their family members’ ownership and intellectual property rights that are or in the process of being commercialized. In addition, we disclose payments to employed practitioners of $5,000 or more from companies with which the practitioners interact as part of their professional activities. These practitioner-industry relationships assist in developing new drugs, devices and therapies and in providing medical education aimed at improving quality of care and enhancing clinical outcomes. At the same time, UH understands that these relationships may create a conflict of interest. In providing this information, UH desires to assist patients in talking with their practitioners about industry relationships and how those relationships may impact their medical care.

UH practitioners seek advance approval for certain new industry relationships. In addition, practitioners report their industry relationships and activities, as well as those of their immediate family members, to the UH Office of Outside Interests annually. We review these reports and implement management plans, as appropriate, to address conflicts of interest that may arise in connection with medical research, clinical care and purchasing decisions.
