About
Michael A. De Georgia, MD is the Director of the Neurocritical Care Center and Co-Director of the Cerebrovascular Center at University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center, where he holds the Maxeen Stone and John A. Flower Endowed Chair in Neurology. Recognized as one of University Hospital's "Distinguished Physicians," he is also Chief of Neurology at University Hospitals Ahuja Medical Center and Professor of Neurology and Associate Faculty Director of Connected Health at Case Western Reserve University.
An internationally recognized expert in neurocritical care and cerebrovascular disease, Dr. De Georgia has authored more than 200 articles, abstracts, book chapters, and the book Neurocritical Care Informatics: Translating Raw Data into Bedside Action. He is the Director of the Neurocritical Care Fellowship Program, has trained more than 60 neurocritical care and vascular neurology fellows, and is a recipient of the Joseph M. Foley teaching award.
Dr. De Georgia has held positions as Director of the Neurological Intensive Care Program at the Cleveland Clinic and Director of the Neurocritical Care and Stroke Program at the State University of New York Upstate Medical University. He received his medical degree from the Northeast Ohio Medical University after completing a six-year BS/MD program, followed by residencies in Internal Medicine at the University of Michigan Medical Center and Neurology at Tufts University-New England Medical Center. He completed a Neurocritical Care fellowship at the University of Heidelberg in Germany. Dr. De Georgia is board-certified in Internal Medicine, Neurology, Vascular Neurology, and Neurocritical Care, and an honorary fellow of the American College of Physicians, American Heart Association, American College of Critical Care Medicine, and Neurocritical Care Society. He is a reviewer for multiple journals, including the Annals of Neurology, Critical Care Medicine, Stroke, and Neurosurgery, is the Neurocritical Care Section Editor for Neurological Research and Practice, and an Editorial Board member of the British Medical Journal's Medical Humanities.
Dr. De Georgia is also the founding Director of University Hospital’s Center for Music and Medicine and Case Western Reserve University's Center for Connected Health Innovation. He is annually listed as one of "America's Best Doctors" and is a frequent health commentator for ABC World News Tonight, CNN, MSNBC, Fox News, and other media outlets. In his spare time, he is a member of the World Doctor’s Orchestra and plays in a rock band called "The Codes."

University Hospitals is committed to transparency in our interactions with industry partners, such as pharmaceutical, biotech, or medical device companies. At UH, we disclose practitioner and their family members’ ownership and intellectual property rights that are or in the process of being commercialized. In addition, we disclose payments to employed practitioners of $5,000 or more from companies with which the practitioners interact as part of their professional activities. These practitioner-industry relationships assist in developing new drugs, devices and therapies and in providing medical education aimed at improving quality of care and enhancing clinical outcomes. UH practitioners seek advance approval for certain new industry relationships. In addition, practitioners report their industry relationships and activities, as well as those of their immediate family members, to the UH Office of Outside Interests annually. We review these reports and implement management plans, as appropriate, to address conflicts of interest that may arise in connection with medical research, clinical care and purchasing decisions.
