WomenCare Midwives

Midwives Provide Care for the Whole Woman

Midwife literally means “with woman”. Since ancient times, women have been helping other women bring new life into the world, and that practice continues today. However, today's midwives are highly educated with advanced degrees of education. These highly educated and specially credentialed nurses also provide routine gynecological services.

What to Expect from a Midwife Throughout Pregnancy, Labor and Delivery

University Hospitals Elyria Medical Center’s WomenCare Program consists of certified nurse midwives with offices in Elyria and Amherst. Our midwives average approximately 300 deliveries per year and have assisted with the births of more than 10,000 children throughout their careers. Contrary to popular belief, each midwife-assisted delivery is performed in a hospital. The proximity to modern hospital technology makes midwife delivery an exceptionally safe, personalized option for labor and delivery.

Just like with physician-assisted delivery, women who choose a midwife as a delivery option also receive comprehensive prenatal care throughout the pregnancy. Health education is also an important component of care, enabling women to make the best decisions for themselves and their babies. Midwives are available to answer questions and evaluate patients to discover problems early, minimizing the chance of complications during pregnancy and birth.

During labor and delivery, midwives practice conservative use of medical interventions—generally only intervening when necessary. Although they are independent care providers, midwives collaborate with physicians to offer patients the full spectrum of care when needed.
