Preventive Health Outreach Programs Provide Improved Outcomes through Cancer Screenings

University Hospitals Elyria Medical Center is a leader in raising community awareness on the importance of early screenings for cancer. Our team works with community organizations and provides access to these important screenings for the early detection of cancer.

Low-Dose Lung Screenings

Because it is difficult to detect and often only found after the disease has spread, lung cancer causes more deaths in men and women than any other cancer. The National Cancer Institute recently completed national lung screening trials, which used computed tomography (CT) lung cancer screening for high-risk patients, including those 55 to 74 years of age, who also met specific criteria. Those at high risk are screened with low-dose CT, as opposed to standard chest X-ray, showing improved outcomes for early detection and a reduction in lung cancer deaths.

In 2015, UH Elyria Medical Center provided low-dose lung screenings to 13 people; two resulted in positive cases. In 2014, 12 people received low-dose lung screenings and six resulted in positive cases. All received appropriate follow-up care.

Screening Mammograms

UH Elyria Medical Center’s Community Health Needs Assessment shows only 53 percent of women age 40 and older in Lorain County reported having a mammogram. Expanding on system screening initiatives, UH Elyria Medical Center also offered campaigns in Elyria in October 2014, where an additional 43 women committed to and completed screening mammograms; in Avon in January 2015, where 12 women committed to and completed screening mammograms; and in Elyria in October 2015, where 43 women committed to and completed screening mammograms. No positive results for breast cancer were detected through these efforts.
