Visitation Policy

Visitation Guidelines Ensure the Safety of Patients, Guests and Staff at University Hospitals Elyria Medical Center

At UH Elyria Medical Center, family members and significant others are not viewed as visitors and are welcome to be with patients in accordance with patient preference. Our visitation policy is intended to ensure the safety of patients, families, employees and visitors of the hospital.

General Patient Visitation Guidelines

  1. Patients define people who are integral to their wellbeing. This may include, but is not limited to: spouse, domestic partners of the same or opposite sex, family members, and friends, regardless of race, color, religion, national origin, age, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation and/or disability. Consent for visitation may be withdrawn at any time by the patient. At the discretion of the staff, the physician, or law enforcement, visitation may be restricted due to the clinical condition of the patient, concerns for the patient’s wellbeing, safety/security of other patients, and/or unusual activity in the department that temporarily is contrary to visitation.
  2. If requested by the patient, his/her name will be omitted from the daily census report provided to Patient Information and Communications Department.
  3. Under certain circumstances (i.e., communicable disease outbreak, disaster situation), hospital visitation may be restricted for patient safety reasons.
  4. Generally, patients will be allowed two people at a time in a semi-private room. Departments may grant exceptions (i.e., Maternity, Pediatrics, etc.) based on special situations (i.e., condition of the patient). Departments granting exceptions will be responsible for informing visitors of the normal procedures for visitation. The charge nurse will be responsible for notifying the front desk information area.
  5. Visitors should conduct themselves in an appropriate manner to ensure patients are not disturbed and their privacy is protected. Visitors may be asked by a Safety/Security officer to leave the premises of the hospital if their behavior is inappropriate.
  6. Children under the age of 16 years accompanied by an adult are allowed visiting privileges on the medical and surgical units unless otherwise determined by the patient’s condition. Children 16 years or older need not be accompanied by an adult.
  7. Patients wishing to visit other patients in the hospital should discuss the risk and benefits with their primary nurse. An order should be obtained from their attending physician and permission from the nurse in charge of the unit to be visited. The patient must be well enough to go without a nurse, except in unusual circumstances, then a nurse will accompany the patient.

Additional Guidelines

  1. No pets are allowed in the hospital unless special arrangements have been made.
  2. Regular visiting hours for patients are generally from noon to 8 p.m. daily to allow patients optimum rest. Patients may receive visits outside of these hours; however, visitors arriving after 8 p.m. will be asked to provide a photo ID so that they may be logged as in the facility by Security.
  3. Specialty departments (Maternity, Behavioral Health, and Pediatrics) may limit visitation based on the wellbeing of the patient population. Please refer to the current individual department policies for further guidance.
  4. Employees are expected to comply with all visitation guidelines. Employees, students, and educational observers may be in the hospital before and after their scheduled work hours for business reasons (training, human resources, etc.) or to be with patients as part of their support group. Loitering before or after work hours or during unscheduled hours is not permitted.
