University Hospitals is dedicated to advancing the field of sports medicine through our leading-edge research and innovation program. Skilled physicians within all subspecialties of sports medicine live out the discovery aspect of University Hospitals’ mission – To Heal. To Teach. To Discover. – through implementing novel treatments and developing the best practices available for total athlete care. As a health care provider supporting not only professional athletes but also many colleges, high schools and youth leagues, we have the unique opportunity to investigate training protocols with our local teams in order to optimize care for athletes at all levels of experience. Our research and innovation program is focused on implementing technology, enhancing performance, preventing injury, and improving surgical and medical treatments. Current and future studies aim to develop sport-specific training protocols, which will ideally improve player performance while incorporating injury prevention skills in order to keep our athletes safer and healthier. In the event that surgical or medical intervention is necessary, our team of physicians remains current in the newest treatments and contributes to exploring leading-edge techniques for developing less invasive procedures, ultimately minimizing time to full recovery. Through our partnership with the Cleveland Browns, our team physicians have published research on elite athletes that utilizes the most up-to-date techniques to provide a safer sporting environment. Investigating topics – such as how changes in active workload between player positions relate to the onset of injury – has led to significant contributions to research in the area of optimizing individualized player performance. With the technological advancements prevalent in the world today, UH Sports Medicine is at the forefront of integrating wearable technology and objective biomarkers into understanding athletic performance and the true nature of injuries at the physiological and metabolic level. It is the goal of the UH Sports Medicine Research Program to translate the knowledge and findings that we observe at the professional and elite level into training protocols that can be used by coaches, athletic trainers and parents in order to improve upon our community’s local athletes. Our research initiative is a collaborative effort that breaks down the orthopedic sports medicine barrier to include multiple scientific specialties, allowing UH to produce an influx of ideas that will continue to grow and contribute to the advancement of this field worldwide.
