Preparing for Outpatient Surgical Procedures

Prior to the Day of Surgery

We recommend that patients refrain from smoking and drinking alcohol at least 24 hours before your surgery unless otherwise authorized by your physician. (Alcohol may increase the depth of your anesthesia or affect the medication given to you.)

  • If you are taking aspirin, medications containing aspirin, NSAIDs, blood-thinning medications or herbal supplements, please notify your surgeon. He/she may want you to stop taking these medications prior to surgery.

If you develop a fever, sore throat, runny nose, diarrhea or flu-like symptoms within two days of your surgery, or need to cancel your surgery for any reason, please notify your surgeon as soon as possible. If you cannot contact your surgeon, or if you have any questions, please call the University Hospitals Conneaut Medical Center Ambulatory Surgery Unit at 440-593-0220.

An Ambulatory Surgery Department nurse will call you the day before your surgery to notify you as to the time you should arrive at UH Conneaut Medical Center for your surgery.

The Day of Surgery

  • Bathe or shower the evening before or the morning of your surgery. Do not bring valuables such as credit cards, checkbook, money or jewelry. You may wear your wedding band if you wish.
  • Dress comfortably. Keep in mind that any dressings, casts or restrictive bandages after surgery will determine what you need to wear to the hospital and home again. Loose clothing is recommended.
  • Additional instructions may also apply to you. Please consult your physician to see if he/she has any special instructions.
  • Please plan on having a friend or family member accompany you to the hospital and home afterwards.

When You Arrive

Please enter UH Conneaut Medical Center through the main entrance and report to the Outpatient Registration Admitting Department. You will then be directed to the Ambulatory Surgery Unit. Approximately one hour prior to surgery an anesthesiologist will review your medical history and ask you questions regarding your health and previous anesthesia history. The anesthesiologist will discuss with you the type of anesthesia planned for your surgery and answer any questions you may have. An operating room nurse will also review your medical history with you.

After Surgery

Following your surgery, you will be taken to the Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) to be observed, and then you will be returned to the Ambulatory Surgery Unit for discharge. Some patients who receive lighter anesthesia will return directly to the Ambulatory Surgery Unit from the operating room. Prior to discharge you will be given specific instructions regarding your care at home. This may include a follow-up visit, diet restrictions, activity limitations, medications and additional instructions your surgeon determines as important to your recovery.

Transportation Home

For safety reasons, if you have been given an anesthetic or received sedation, you must have a responsible adult drive you home and stay with you for the first 24 hours after surgery. We cannot permit you to leave unescorted. If you received only a local anesthetic, you may drive yourself home.
