UH Comprehensive Hernia Center Provides Groundbreaking Options for Hernia Treatment

Common Places for Hernias

The surgeons at Cleveland’s Comprehensive Hernia Center at University Hospitals offer both minimally invasive surgery and traditional (open) surgical options for all types of hernias, depending on the patient’s needs. Our center is the only program in the region that offers a multidisciplinary approach to care for patients with hernias. A team of highly skilled specialists provide today’s most advanced management of all types of hernias. Working with each patient to determine the best surgical option, emphasis is placed on a durable and lasting repair while reducing discomfort and ensuring a fast and complete recovery.

Minimally Invasive Hernia Surgery

Our experienced surgical team at UH Comprehensive Hernia Center performs a high volume of minimally invasive (laparoscopic) hernia procedures each year with outstanding results. These laparoscopic procedures are performed through a few small incisions with a help of a telescope that is inserted inside a patient’s abdomen or groin.

Minimally invasive surgery has become the procedure of choice for many hernia repairs and offers many benefits, including:

  • Less pain
  • Faster recovery time
  • Fewer complications
  • Less recurrence of hernia

Most groin hernia surgeries can be performed on an outpatient basis, with the procedure lasting about 20 minutes. Patients typically return home the same day and are able to resume light work or leisure activities within two to three days.

Hiatal Hernia Surgery

Hiatal and paraesophageal hernias are often associated with severe acid reflux and difficulties with eating. The patients are required to undergo thorough preoperative testing to determine the most appropriate procedure needed. The laparoscopic repair of those hernias usually only requires a one-night stay and results in a complete resolution of all symptoms in vast majority of patients.
