Lymphedema Therapy

Lymphedema Therapy at University Hospitals Improves Drainage and Healing

Expert therapists at University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center’s rehabilitation services offer lymphedema management for patients with a build-up of fluid due to damage or blockage within the lymphatic system, sometimes caused by cancer or cancer treatments.

After surgery and radiation, many patients experience swelling in their extremities, head and neck, or genitals. UH therapists reduce swelling and promote better lymphatic drainage by using techniques such as:

  • Compression bandaging
  • Education
  • Exercise
  • Manual lymphatic drainage

Combined Therapy Offers Optimum Benefits

Using massage, bandaging, exercise and education, therapists with advanced training and certification combine therapies to decrease swelling in a limb with lymphedema. This therapy is also called complex decongestive therapy.
