Breast Imaging Fellowship

The Breast Imaging Division at University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center offers two Breast Imaging Fellowship positions each year. These comprehensive, one-year fellowship opportunities are structured to meet the guidelines and curriculum recommended by the Society of Breast Imaging (SBI).

Each of the five UH Breast Centers, including the Breen Breast Health Pavilion, is accredited by the American College of Radiology (ACR) as a “Breast Imaging Center of Excellence.” We also maintain ACR accreditation for MRI at all UH sites that perform breast MRI. All breast imaging sites have superior support staff in place, including a clinical nurse navigator and are supported by seven dedicated breast imaging radiologists.

Over 75,000 examinations performed each year

  • Screening and diagnostic mammography – 64,000+ per year
  • Breast ultrasound – 8,000+ per year
  • Breast MRI – 800+ per year
  • Interventional procedures - 3,000+ per year
    • Ultrasound core biopsies
    • Stereotactic core biopsies (prone and upright with lateral arm capability)
    • MRI core biopsies
  • Magseed and wire localizations
  • Ductography

Current Technology Overview

  • Hologic Dimensions mammography units (tomosynthesis with C-view) are available at all UH Breast Centers
  • Seven supersonic ultrasound units
  • Four stereotactic biopsy units (three prone and one upright with lateral arm capability)
  • MRI equipment includes 1.5 and 3.0T Siemens, Philips and GE magnets
  • Suros Atec biopsy devices for use in MRI, stereotactic and ultrasound biopsies

Conferences

  • Weekly multidisciplinary tumor board conference attended by the fellows and a faculty member
  • Weekly resident conferences
  • Monthly radiology-pathology conference
  • Monthly journal club

The Breast Imaging Fellow will be actively involved in the interpretation of examinations, performance of procedures and consultations with referring physicians.

Dedicated research time is negotiable for the Fellows and they are given access to the Case Center for Imaging Research (CCIR), a joint venture between Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) School of Medicine and UH Cleveland Medical Center. There is funding available for educational meetings/conferences.

The ultimate goal for the Breast Imaging Fellows is to assume the role of primary imager with the faculty member as a supervisor. The Breast Imaging Division has a strong interest in resident and fellow education and clinical research is encouraged.

UH Cleveland Medical Center is participating in the Breast Imaging Fellowship Match, which will take place in March 2018 for the 2019 appointment year. The match is sponsored by the Society of Breast Imaging and it will be managed by the National Resident Matching Program.
