The Latest in Breast Enhancement and Reconstruction

Procedures offered at the UH Center for Breast Enhancement & Reconstruction include:

  • Breast augmentation (augmentation mammoplasty): A procedure that enhances and enlarges a woman's breasts with the use of breast implants. At UH, both saline and gel implants (including cohesive shaped gel implants) are used for breast augmentation.
  • Breast lift (mastopexy): A procedure to lift and reshape sagging breasts. Pregnancy, nursing, significant weight gain and loss, or aging may cause sagging of the breasts. This is a function of the effects of gravity and physiologic changes within the breast tissue. As the skin loses its elasticity, the breasts often lose their shape and firmness and begin to sag.
  • Breast reconstruction: A procedure that is usually done after a breast has been removed because of cancer. Newer techniques and procedures have made it possible to create a breast that can come close to a woman's natural breast in form and appearance. If partial breast removal has created asymmetry and other deformities, oncoplastic techniques can be used to improve the final cosmetic results. At UH, Plastic Surgery is an integral part of the comprehensive breast cancer care.
  • Breast reduction: A procedure that reduces the size as well as lifts and shapes heavy, sagging breasts. Breast reduction is usually performed for physical relief of symptoms rather than simply cosmetic improvement. In many cases the procedure is covered by health insurance.
