University Hospitals Total Joint Replacement Division Offers Superb Care and Innovation

Rehabilitation at the Total Joint Replacement Division

The Total Joint Replacement Division at University Hospitals Department of Orthopaedics combines successful medical care, personalized attention and innovative scientific research with an unwavering purpose: to provide better treatments and outcomes for patients.

Today, our emphasis on innovation is stronger than ever, as all members of our division are fellowship-trained in reconstructive or joint replacement surgery. Not only do our surgeons perform advanced arthroscopic, or minimally invasive, joint replacement and computer-assisted surgery, they also use the most appropriate surgical materials for each patient, which leads to more successful outcomes.

Large Volume of Joint Surgeries Leads to Better Outcomes

Studies show that patients have the best results and the fewest complications with their total joint replacement surgeries when the procedures are done by board-certified surgeons and at hospitals that perform a high volume of this type of specialized surgery.

The Total Joint Replacement Division at UH Cleveland Medical Center has an exceptionally large and growing volume of total joint and joint preservation surgeries, performing more than 1,100 operations each year – among the highest number of hospitals in the U.S. In addition, our division consistently ranks as one of the best programs in Ohio for outcomes.

Total joint replacement surgeries at UH are performed by board-certified and fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeons with subspecialty training in joint reconstruction. Types of surgeries can include total joint replacement, partial joint replacement (partial hip replacement or partial knee replacement), and arthroplasty.

Joint-Preserving Procedures

For patients with minor joint pain or minimally reduced joint function, joint-preserving procedures are an alternative treatment option. Some sports injuries or patients with mild arthritis or joint related conditions can achieve increased function and reduced pain through these joint-preserving procedures. These treatment options may be especially beneficial for young adult or adolescent patients who have joint problems. The experts at the Center for Joint Replacement & Preservation at UH Cleveland Medical Center offer joint-preserving procedures, such as:

  • Realignment osteotomy: helps to shift weight to a normal part of a joint
  • Joint debridement: removes harmful fragments and tissue from around the joint

Such measures can potentially correct problems and delay or even eliminate the need for future joint replacement surgery.

Scientific Research and Clinical Trials

At UH Cleveland Medical Center, in conjunction with Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, our research scientists are involved in developing tomorrow’s arthritis treatments and joint replacement implants. At the same time, our staff is engaged in multiple research studies that are leading the way to further advances to help those in need of total joint replacements.
