Highly Rated Orthopaedic Residency Program

As one of the premier advanced training opportunities in the U.S., University Hospitals/Case Western Reserve University Orthopaedic Residency Program remains one of the most highly rated residencies in the field. We average more than 1000 applications for the eight residency positions available each year.

The program provides comprehensive training in all aspects of orthopaedic surgery. Our internationally renowned faculty furnish training in all of the orthopaedic subspecialties, which means that our residents need never travel to other programs in order to achieve full exposure and robust case numbers in every field of orthopaedics. State-of-the-art facilities and nationally recognized research programs complement the residents’ training experience with a full range of clinical and surgical opportunities. Graduates of our program evolve into leaders in the field and pursue highly rewarding, successful careers in both academic and community based practices.

The orthopaedic teaching staff consists of 50 full–time instructors across each of our teaching institutions. In addition, our relationship with Case Western Reserve University affords the opportunity to work with highly regarded basic science faculty as part of an active, closely integrated research adjunct.

All residents utilize the staff and facilities of UH Cleveland Medical Center, including UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospitalthe Cleveland Veterans Affairs Medical Center, MetroHealth Medical Center, and other locations in the community including UH Ahuja Medical Center with the newly completed UH Drusinsky Sports Medicine Institute. Notably, we are one of the only residencies in the country that serve as the primary orthopaedic residents at two different Level I trauma centers.

Applicants to our program have two match options. This includes our traditional five-year track (7 residents per match) and a six-year research track (1 resident per match). The six-year track includes a protected year (The Allen Fellowship) prior to the intern year to concentrate on research, free from clinical duties. Applicants may rank the two tracks in any order they please. The purpose of the separate matches is to give as much control to the applicant as possible, and to allow the applicant ample time to plan and prepare for the Allen Fellowship year. These two tracks form one integrated program. Prior Allen fellows have consistently gone on to successful academic careers at institutions across the U.S.
