The Bohlman Spine Fellowship at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine is a one year program that involves all aspects of spinal surgery. We take great pride in having a tradition of excellence that has produced leaders and innovators in the field. In addition, we have an outstanding research department with opportunities to become involved in both clinical and basic science projects in the areas of spine biology and biomechanics.
Our faculty members on each of the rotations are closely involved with the fellows, and we all have a sincere interest in making sure the fellows’ experience will prepare them for a career in spine surgery. The fellows who have completed our program have found they had an excellent experience in the care of patients with spinal problems, including cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spinal disorders and traumatic injuries. The only changes over the next several years will be the addition of new faculty at both University Hospitals of Cleveland and at MetroHealth Medical Center.
The fellowship is designed to give each of the fellows an equal and broad experience covering all areas of spinal surgery. Three fellows are selected per year to cover our three unique services. Each fellow has an assigned role on the rotation and has the opportunity to learn the techniques of each of the spine experts on our faculty.
Each fellow will also be required to become involved in at least one research project during the year. The faculty will be available to help with topics, study design, data collection, and final preparation of the work for presentation. This project can be a basic science or clinical experiment, and the fellow is ultimately in control of the project. At the end of the year, each of the fellows will present his or her project at the annual research meeting, to the Henry H. Bohlman Guest Lecturer in Spinal Surgery.
Our goal is to train the future leaders in orthopaedic spine surgery who will go on to perform ethical and skilled work in their community.
