UH Translational Laboratory Leadership

The management team of University Hospitals Translational Laboratory comprises:

  • Clifford V. Harding, M D, Ph.D. – Chair of Pathology
  • Joseph Willis, MD – Vice-Chair of Pathology for Clinical Affairs
  • Christine L. Schmotzer, MD – Medical Director
  • Miguel E. Quiñones-Mateu, Ph.D. – Scientific Director
  • Don Landek – Administrative Director

Dr. Clifford Harding graduated magna cum laude, and with Highest Honors, in Biology from Harvard College in 1979. He completed his MD and Ph.D. in Cell Biology at Washington University of St. Louis in 1985. He went on as a Resident and then Chief Resident in Pathology, eventually moving up to an Instructor position in 1989. From 1990 until 1993, Dr. Harding was an Assistant Professor at Washington University as well as Attending Physician at Barnes Hospital of St. Louis. In 1993, he came to Case Western Reserve University as an Assistant Professor of Pathology and as Senior Staff Physician at University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center. Presently, Dr. Harding spends his time as Kahn Professor and Chair of Pathology and Director of the Medical Scientist Training Program.

Dr. Joseph Willis graduated from University College, Cork, Ireland M.B. B.Ch. B.A.O. In 1986, Dr. Willis did a Fellowship at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland followed by a Research Fellowship in the Department of Surgery, State University New York and a Residency AP/CP Pathology Program at the University of Rochester in New York. Dr. Willis currently serves as Associate Professor, Director, Tissue Management, Case Comprehensive Cancer Center and Vice Chair of Pathology for Clinical Affairs, UH Cleveland Medical Center/Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland.

Dr. Christine L. Schmotzer earned her B.A. in Biochemistry and Chemistry from Case Western Reserve University in 1999 and remained at CWRU to earn her MD in 2004. She completed her residency training in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology as well as a Molecular Genetic Pathology Fellowship at Emory University in Atlanta. In 2009, Dr. Schmotzer joined University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center as Director of Clinical Chemistry where she oversees the chemistry core laboratory and special chemistry sections. She serves as Medical Director of the University Hospitals Translational Laboratory and has an academic appointment of Assistant Professor of Pathology at Case Western Reserve University.

Dr. Miguel E. Quiñones-Mateu holds a bachelor’s degree in Biology from the Universidad Central de Venezuela and completed his Ph.D. in Molecular Biology at the Centro de Biologia Molecular “Severo Ochoa”, Universidad Autonoma de Madrid, Spain. He continued his training as a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Medicine at Case Western Reserve University, prior to becoming Assistant Professor in the Department of Virology, The Cleveland Clinic. Recently, and following a five-year hiatus in the corporate world, he joined UH Cleveland Medical Center as Scientific Director of the University Hospitals Translational Laboratory and has an academic appointment of Assistant Professor of Pathology at Case Western Reserve University.

Don M. Landek MS MT, SC (ASCP) earned his B.S. in Biology from Roosevelt University, Chicago in 1973 and attended the Medical Technology Program at Holy Cross Hospital in Chicago 1974, becoming certified as a medical technologist. He returned to Roosevelt University to earn a MS in biology in 1985 and became certified as a chemistry specialist SC (ASCP). Landek worked in various laboratory management roles from chemistry supervisor to laboratory director at a number of hospitals and organizations, including Columbia HCA, and Michael Reese Hospital Chicago. In 2000, he came to University Hospitals and assumed the role of Administrative Director of Pathology Laboratories and President of UHLSF, the laboratories outreach entity of University Hospitals laboratory.
