Nutrition plays an important role for those living with HIV/AIDS. The virus and the medications can cause weight loss, weight gain, nausea, diarrhea, constipation, anorexia, elevated cholesterol, triglycerides, and blood sugar. Diet plays a huge role in managing each of these side effects. In addition, staying properly nourished can help equip the body to fight off infection.

The SIU has a dietitian on staff to meet with patients to address nutrition issues. The dietitian will meet with new patients to establish a rapport and to attend to any nutritional concerns. The dietitian will also monitor the nutrition statuses of all patients, educate patients on appropriate food choices specific to needs, perform body composition tests and provide information on dietary and herbal supplements.
