Summer Youth Volunteer Leadership Program

Beginning in 2017, University Hospitals is offering a collaborative partnership with the Effective Leadership Academy, which includes interactive, hands-on 21st century leadership training and essential life skills as part of your volunteer experience. This valuable experience is offered free of charge to all volunteers participating in the Summer Youth Volunteer Leadership Program.

While volunteering is a fun and very rewarding experience, it is also a very serious commitment. Volunteering requires that you be willing to learn, work hard, act responsibly and be open to new experiences. The Summer Youth Volunteer Leadership Program is an eight-week program for students age 15 through graduation. Participants volunteer three to four hours per week and also attend two Leadership Training sessions. At the conclusion of the program, participants receive a certificate documenting completion of professional leadership training. In order to register for the program complete the following steps:

Step 1: RSVP for Informational Session

RSVP for one of the informational sessions below. You must attend with your parent or guardian and bring your completed application with typed answers to questions (Question 9 on application) and your reference. (See step 2.) You will participate in a group interview at this informational session, receive information regarding the Summer Youth Volunteer Leadership Program, and have the opportunity to ask questions. Information/Group Interview Sessions

  • Wednesday, March 1: 5:30 – 7:30 p.m.
  • Wednesday, March 22: 5:30 – 7:30 p.m.
  • Saturday, April 8: 9 – 11 a.m. (Session 1) or 11:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. (Session 2) – Choose one session
  • Thursday, April 20: 5:30 – 7:30 p.m.

Step 2: Complete Application

Complete an application, including answers to question 9. Have your reference letter completed by someone who knows you from a professional relationship such as a guidance counselor, teacher, someone you have babysat for, an organization in which you belong, et cetera. Return all completed forms at your informational session.

NOTE: If accepted into the program you will be required to attend one general orientation session, and if placed in University Hospitals Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital also attend the training listed.

General Orientation Sessions

  • Saturday, April 29: 9 – 11 a.m.
    (Cart training: 11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.)
  • Wednesday, May 17: 5:30 – 7:30 p.m.

UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital Training

  • Wednesday, May 24: 4 – 8 p.m.

Step 3: Register with Effective Leadership Academy

May be completed after attending Informational Session.

Each volunteer will attend two sessions (mandatory) over the course of the program.
