The program is a combined integrated/independent program, 6 years in duration for the integrated track and 3 years for the independent track.
Two residents are appointed each year for a total of 12 residents in the program.
Residents partake in didactic conferences including weekly core curriculum lectures, pre-operative indications conference, grand rounds, monthly journal club, hand conference, complications conference, a yearly cadaver dissection course, as well as a specialty cleft lip/palate and craniofacial conference.
These didactic components have been designed to provide adequate training and experience in plastic surgery. The curriculum is sequenced so that all topics of the plastic surgery core curriculum will be included in both the last 3 years of the integrated program and the 3 years of the independent program, covering all 6 core competency requirements.
Academic productivity is currently, and will continue to be, a hallmark feature of the program.
The curriculum contains a meaningful and integrated research component with a dual focus on basic and clinical projects within the division.
Each resident in the fourth year of the integrated program and first year of the independent program will spend 6 months in the research lab providing ample opportunity for research training.
The resident is required to participate in at least 2 studies while in the research rotation and 2 clinical or anatomical studies each year thereafter. These studies are converted to manuscripts by the residents and submitted for publication in a peer-reviewed journal. Additionally, these studies are presented at local, regional, and national meetings.
