Case Western Reserve University has a diverse didactic program consisting of basic science and clinically related lectures, specialty conferences, semiannual surgical wet labs, and guest lectures.
Residents, full-time and part-time faculty, and visiting professors all contribute to different lectures throughout the year.
Additional Educational Events
Second year residents are sent to the Wills Eye Board Review Course before OKAP examinations each year.
Chief residents attend either the annual Academy of American Ophthalmology conference or another major conference of their choice as well as a surgical wet lab course in Ft. Worth, Texas focusing on phacoemulsification.
Any resident presenting a paper or poster at a conference also receives departmental support.
All residents are welcome to attend any Cleveland Clinic GME courses or conferences free of charge.
There are also community outreach programs the residents are invited to participate in, such as Prevent Blindness Ohio and the Cleveland Sight Center.
Education Conferences
In addition to the resident didactic lectures, there are other scheduled conferences on fluorescein angiography, ethics, cornea, and neuro-ophthalmology. At the end of the academic year, the department sponsors an annual CME meeting and research day. All the area residents and ophthalmologists convene for the Cleveland Ophthalmology Society (COS) quarterly conference.
Additionally, there are seven Joint Conferences for the Case Western and Cleveland Clinic faculty and residents. These conferences cover all major subspecialties and feature in-depth discussions of major studies, treatment and management, and the latest research.
Grand Rounds
Residents, faculty, community ophthalmologists and optometrists attend weekly Grand Rounds every Wednesday from September to June. Grand Rounds speakers are drawn from the local, regional, and national ophthalmology scene.
Over the course of the year, there is a comprehensive review of topics in all the clinical specialties and cutting edge research. Residents also participate in Grand Rounds, presenting case reports of patients seen in practice.
Journal Club
Several Journal Clubs are held throughout the year, moderated by our community faculty members. Typically, several articles following a particular specialty and theme are chosen. Three to four residents are responsible of reviewing each article, providing a quick synopsis and stimulating a lively discussion.
Other Journal Clubs have also been more surgically-centered such as reviewing videos of surgical complications and talking about phaco clinical pearls.
