Modalities

Russian electrical stimulation – This machine sends electrical current through the skin. Russian stimulation causes strong muscular contractions. The purpose of Russian stimulation is to enhance muscular contraction during exercise in order to improve strength.

Microcurrent electrical stimulation – The purpose of Microcurrent is to affect the tissue on a cellular level. The theory is that micro current simulates the natural current present in cells. The natural current is disrupted in damaged tissue causing pain, swelling and dysfunction of the normal cellular process. Microcurrent helps to normalize tissue on a cellular level to reduce swelling, decrease pain and normalize function. Patient sensation is nearly imperceptible.

IFC Interferential Current - This machine sends electrical impulses through your skin. The purpose of IFC is to help relieve pain. Different settings are used depending on the nature of the cause of pain, it can affect your nerves or it can cause chemicals to be released in your body. Therapists may use IFC to apply to the injury site just before or after you participate in a physical therapy routine

TENS – Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation is an electrical device that transmits electrical current across the skin with no disruption of the skin barrier for the symptomatic relief of pain.

JOBST compression pump – An electric pneumatic device that will provide compression around a limb in order to reduce fluid retention and swelling.

Ultrasound – An electrical device used to generate sound waves. The sound waves generate tissue vibration, which in turn cause friction. This process will generate heat in deeper tissue.

Biofeedback – Method of augmenting awareness of movement or physiologic events by amplifying and displaying this information so that the patient can learn to control these functions.

Heat – A therapy involving the application of heat for the control of pain and muscle relaxation

Cryotherapy – A therapy involving the application of ice or cold packs for the control of pain and swelling.

Iontophoresis – Electrical current used in conjunction with medication; usually a pain or anti-inflammatory medication. The current can be either positive or negative depending on the medication characteristics. The electric current is used to drive the medication past the skin barrier.

Phonophoresis – Ultrasound used in conjunction with medication; usually a pain or anti-inflammatory medication. The sound waves generated by electricity are used to drive the medication past the skin barrier.

Cervical and Lumbar Traction – A mechanical device that is used to apply a force through the body in order to draw apart the vertebrae of the spine. It may be used for patients experiencing neck pain, low back pain, or radicular pain caused by a disc protrusion or degenerative changes.
