Residency & Fellowship Programs
The Association of Residents and Fellows
Welcome to the Association of Residents and Fellows (ARF) page. Our mission is to represent and advocate the interests of the residents and fellows of University Hospitals (UH) as well as to positively promote a working environment favorable for optimal medical training and patient care. If you are a current UH resident or fellow, we encourage you to get involved with the ARF. We look forward to working with you and listening to your suggestions for a rich, productive and enjoyable training period.

History/Overview
In the autumn of 1991, an ad hoc group of chief residents formed the Association of Residents and Fellows at UH. The goal of this committee was to form an advocacy group that would serve as a mechanism for presenting residents' concerns to the administration and to help develop solutions to the problems inherent in residency training. Currently, the ARF serves more than 600 residents and fellows training at University Hospitals.

Activities and Benefits of Membership
From a resident's first day of orientation to the final days of training, the ARF plays an active role in a resident's experience at UH. The ARF maintains a dialogue with the administration as participating residents are asked to serveon the Graduate Medical Education Committee and other various committees at UH. Seminars sponsored by the ARF familiarize residents with such vital issues as contract preparation and the fundamentals of entering the managed care practice arena. The ARF also sponsors social events such as informal pizza parties that bring together residents from every department. In addition, ARF also sponsors social events with the residents/fellows at Cleveland Clinic Foundation and MetroHealth.

Membership
ARF membership is open to all residents and fellows in postgraduate programs at UH. Dues consist of $2.00 per month that is deducted from the payroll of members with their written consent. In addition, the ARF receives matching contributions from the hospital administration and from individual departments for each resident. Dues go to support social events, ARF initiatives, ARF costs (e.g. printing flyers), sponsoring speakers, and toward making group purchases for the Resident's Lounge on 3rd Lakeside. Contact the Graduate Medical Education (GME) office at 216-844-3887 to become a member.

Facilities
With a strong influence from the ARF, UH approved allocation of space for the Association. In 1994, the Academic Center for Residents and Fellows opened on the third floor of the Lakeside Building. This dedicated space provides a pleasant, congenial environment within the hospital walls where residents gather, confer, study and enjoy a respite from the busy pace of residency. The center features on-call rooms, a lounge, locker space, a conference room, a computer room and kitchen facilities. The Residency Office and Minority Development Office are also located here. UHC residents and fellows have access to the Center year round, 24 hours a day.

Meetings
Meetings are held on a monthly basis. Please contact the GME office.

Current Initiatives
Affiliation with Case Western Reserve University and access to facilities
As a result of the affiliation between University Hospital and Case Western Reserve University, the residents and fellows enjoy access to the medical school and the Veale Center (gym). We also can check out items from the medical school library and have access to free e-mail accounts via Case Web Mail.
