The Pathology Laboratories of University Hospitals Case Medical Center are full service laboratories serving the needs of the wide range of patients. The Department of Pathology has two divisions: Anatomic Pathology, and Clinical Pathology. The Anatomic Pathology Division encompasses Cytopathology, Surgical Pathology and the Autopsy Services. The Clinical Pathology Division encompasses the Core Laboratory (Accessioning, Chemistry, Hematology, Coagulation), Flow Cytometry, Microbiology, Virology, Blood Bank and Transfusion Medicine Service (including Donor Apheresis), HLA (tissue typing), Molecular Diagnostics, and Point-of-Care testing (POCT).
All results of laboratory testing (except waived POCT) are available electronically as soon as testing is complete. These results may be accessed by inquiry into the Hospital Information System (IBM), the internet system “Physician Portal”, the client-specific LabTest system for the doctor’s office and directly in SoftLab. Cumulative laboratory summaries are printed daily, in the late afternoon and evening, and are distributed to the patient divisions for charting during third shift. Discharge summaries are printed for each patient and are sent to Medical Records for inclusion in the patient's record.
The Pathology Department publishes a Guide to Laboratory Services that is available in binder form to outpatient clients. It includes pertinent information related to sample-collection and lists of the laboratories and their hours of operation, names and telephone numbers of contact people for each laboratory, test availability, priority, expected turnaround times, specimen requirements, and collection instructions.

Call the Physician Referral Service at (800) 552-8338 or (216) 844-7553 to refer a patient, request a physician consultation, schedule an appointment or request additional information. The office is staffed from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., weekdays.
