Condition:
Description: "Electrical activation of the diaphragm for ventilatory assist" is a clinical research study investigating a new diaphragm pacing system in quadriplegic patients who require a mechanism ventilator. This is a minimally invasive, low-risk surgical procedure implanting electrodes laparoscopically into the diaphragm muscle. These electrodes are attached to a stimulator that delivers an electrical impulse causing the diaphragm to contract. This enables a person to breath without their mechanical ventilator.
Criteria: Participants must be at least 18 years of age, have a cervical spinal cord injury, be dependant on mechanical ventilation, and have functioning bilateral phrenic nerves.
