The NIMH Center for Bipolar Disorder of University Hospitals Case Medical Center and Case School of Medicine is conducting clinical research on the treatment of Bipolar Disorder in patients who also have problems with alcohol or drug use. |

| Description: |
The NIMH Center for Bipolar Disorder of University Hospitals Case Medical Center and Case School of Medicine is conducting clinical research on the treatment of Bipolar Disorder in patients who also have problems with alcohol or drug use. This research study will last up to 28 weeks, and is looking at a combination of medications for treatment. The goal of the research is to compare the effectiveness and safety of the use of two medications (lithium and depakote) versus three medications (lithium, depakote, and lamictal). Throughout participation in this research study, symptoms will be actively monitored and any changes in condition will be reviewed and appropriately treated. |
| Criteria: |
Participants must be 16 years of age and older, be experiencing symptoms related to depression, have current Alcohol Abuse/Dependence, or Substance Abuse/Dependence and have a diagnosis of Bipolar Disorder, although participants do not need to have been diagnosed or treated previously for Bipolar Disorder. Potential participants will receive an evaluation and diagnosis at no cost. Participants cannot have used Lamictal (lamotrigine). |
