This commitment to clinical research allows the division to use appropriate strategies and techniques to best treat patients and maximize results, including:
The Foot and Ankle Division is a leader in arthroscopic treatments for ankles, a procedure that generally involves only small puncture wounds and local anesthesia, resulting in much faster recovery times than with traditional surgery. Minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery also greatly reduces scarring, blood loss and recovery time.
Foot and ankle problems often require medical attention from other subspecialties. Thanks to its close collaboration with UH Case Medical Center’s musculoskeletal radiologists, the Foot and Ankle Division uses advanced imaging techniques to detect problems that would otherwise be difficult to diagnose. Because foot and ankle conditions often require physical therapy, physical therapists and orthotics specialists guide patients to full recovery. We also collaborate with University Hospitals Neurological Institute to get to the root of developmental and neurological problems. For example, the Foot and Ankle Division performed an operation in conjunction with UH Neurological Institute that enabled a young man with severe deformity to walk upright for the first time in decades.
