Condition:
Description: The Neurological Institute Clinical Trials Unit is conducting a research study to find out if treatment with either aspirin alone or aspirin and Plavix® help to prevent another stroke in people who recently suffered a "lacunar stroke". A lacunar stroke causes small areas of damage to the inner part of the brain and is due to blockage of small blood vessels in the brain. Both aspirin and Plavix® are prescribed by physicians to prevent stroke, but it has not been determined if either aspirin alone or aspirin and Plavix® are more effective in preventing another stroke in people who have already had a lacunar stroke. Participants will be randomly assigned to either aspirin or aspirin and Plavix®. In addition, participants will be assigned to one of two groups of blood pressure control. This study may not benefit the participants. The study is expected to last about two years. There will be 3 to 5 visits over the first 3 to 4 monthsand then visits will be scheduled every three months. Parking will be reimbursed, but there will be no other compensation.
Criteria: Participants must be 40 or older and must have suffered a lacunar stroke within 6 months of participation.
