On the Road to Cancer Prevention
A clinical trial of vitamin D in patients with Barrett’s esophagus is a
step toward prevention of esophageal cancer
Contributing Author: Linda C. Cummings, MD
The incidence of esophageal adenocarcinoma has
been rising the past few decades, and patients with
Barrett’s esophagus have a 30 to 60 times higher risk
of developing esophageal adenocarcinoma compared
with the general population. Because of the poor
prognosis, prevention of esophageal adenocarcinoma
is an important clinical goal.
Teamwork and the Treatment of
Inflammatory Bowel Disease
A multidisciplinary approach provides one-stop personalized inpatient and outpatient services
Contributing Author: Fabio Cominelli,
MD, PhD
The Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) Center within
University Hospitals Digestive Health Institute at University
Hospitals Case Medical Center includes expert surgeons,
gastroenterologists, nutritionists, pathologists and
radiologists who work together to optimize care for
patients with ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease.
Advances in Bariatric Surgery
Pioneering single-incision laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy provides a range of advantages
Contributing Author: Alan A. Saber,
MD, MS, FACS,
FASMBS
Bariatric patients at University Hospitals Case and
Geauga medical centers benefit from an innovative
procedure that combines single-incision laparoscopic
surgery (SILS) with sleeve gastrectomy. Surgeons
perform the procedure through a small incision within
the umbilicus, leaving an almost invisible single scar.
Aggressive Treatment of Crohn’s Disease
Early biologic therapy for perianal Crohn’s disease improves medical outcomes
Contributing Author: Jeffry A. Katz, MD
A 23-year-old man presented with a painful lump and
drainage from the perirectal area. Evaluation with
examination under anesthesia at University Hospitals
Case Medical Center revealed a perianal abscess and
fistula, which was surgically drained. A colonoscopy
showed mild ileal and rectal Crohn’s disease.
