The Department of Neurology, part of the Neurological Institute at University Hospitals, provides consultation services for the entire range of neurological disorders with special physician expertise in the fields of stroke prevention, stroke treatment, seizure disorders, neuromuscular disorders, movement disorders, dementia and memory difficulties, autonomic dysfunction, and neuro-ophthalmology. Our neurocritical care team provides the best possible care for severely ill, hospitalized patients in our dedicated Neuro Intensive Care Unit.
Our experienced neurologists use a multi-disciplinary, integrated approach to patient care and work closely with our specialists in neurosurgery, neuropathology, endocrinology, neuro-oncology, neuro-psychology, ophthalmology, neurotology and other associated disciplines to determine the best treatment plan for each patient. Several diagnostic laboratories support the clinical care programs, including electroencephalography (EEG), prolonged EEG monitoring, electromyography (EMG), non-invasive blood flow measurement (carotid ultrasound and transcranial Doppler studies), and tests of autonomic function. Detailed neuropsychological testing is available to assist in the evaluation and treatment of disorders affecting cognition and behavior.
Clinical excellence is complemented by clinical research conducted through the Translational Neurosciences Center at the Neurological Institute in a wide variety of critical issues, including deep brain stimulation, stenting for the carotid and intra-cranial arteries, and thrombolytic treatment for acute ischemic stroke.
