Hematology and Oncology
The Division of Hematology/Oncology encompasses a balance of clinical and research oriented faculty. Clinicians participate in highly integrated, multi-disciplinary, clinical-research oriented to patient care in hematology (benign and malignant hematology) and oncology (all solid tumors). The Division pursues basic and translational research programs with expertise in colon cancer genetics, stem cell biology, developmental therapeutics, vascular biology and angiogenesis. Clinical research programs that are NIH/NCI supported include: bone marrow transplantation, early Phase I and II anticancer drug trials, AIDS malignancies and coagulation disorders.

The Division is closely aligned with the NCI-designated CASE Comprehensive Cancer Center and the Ireland Cancer Center of University Hospitals of Cleveland. As the only National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center in northern Ohio (one of an elite group of 43 in the country) it is committed to pioneering new cancer treatments through innovative investigation, groundbreaking clinical research and patient-centered programs. Division members participate in these Cancer Center programs: signal transduction, cell survival and death, cancer genetics, radiation biology, hematopoietic and immune cell biology, and developmental therapeutics. All members of the Division of Hematology/Oncology are active in Cancer Center programs.

Division members lead multidisciplinary teams at the Ireland Cancer Center. These professional teams from medicine, surgery, pediatrics, and radiology join with specialized oncology nurses, dieticians, social workers, and music and art therapists to formulate individualized patient care plans. Each patient care team focuses on a major body system affected by cancer, or on a specific procedure, to ensure that therapies are designed by experts in multiple disciplines. A single physician coordinates care with input from the patient’s team.
  • Each team has developed a treatment carepath unique to the disease site. These carepaths incorporate the latest therapies, techniques and technologies for patients with various types and stages of cancer. They also assist the clinicians in defining applicable clinical trials for each patient.
  • The team approach to care begins during the patient’s first visit.
